Traditional African waist beads is an age-old African tradition since the 15th century popularized by the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria.  The symbolic reasoning behind waist beads vary.  They are mainly used to symbolize womanhood, sexuality, femininity, healing, spirituality, body shaping and fashion.  

First ask yourself, "Where do I want my beads to sit"?  Most popular is right under belly button.  The higher you wear your waist beads, the more you are aware of your weight gain/ loss.  They will quickly become tight with weight gain and loose with weight loss.  Please be mindful elastic waist beads will not help you gauge your weight because they stretch. The best option is tie on or screw on beads since they do not stretch. You need a flexible tape measure as pictured to the left.  It is best to measure yourself in morning.  DO NOT suck your abdomen in to measure, stay relaxed.  Place measuring tape around desired place that you want your beads to lay.  Where the end of tape measure meets and number is your measurement.  You may also use a string to measure. Simply follow steps above. Instead place string desired length next to a ruler or stiff measuring tape to see number.  Please measure in inches.

Best thing about waist beads is they are unique.  You can wear one strand or as many strands as you would like.  You can wear them for whatever reason you like.  They are powerful and great for self expression. Beads serve as a ongoing reminder to be more aware and loving towards yourself.
